K: Knowledge of societal health issues
Knowledge of the biological sciences isn’t the only thing important to becoming a potential health professional. Knowing the societal issues that affect patient populations is a huge component to maintaining and restoring health.
To maintain this knowledge, each second, third, and fourth general meeting of the Filipinx Association includes a public health corner where the historian informs the general membership of relevant social, political, historical, or cultural issues related to health in the United States or the Philippines.
A: Academic excellence
As many of its members have goals of being admitted to highly-competitive undergraduate or graduate programs, not to mention to importance of the fundamental concepts learned in undergraduate coursework, the Filipinx Association for Health Careers wants to ensure that its members have all the resources needed to maintain academic success.
To ensure that its members are reaching their academic goals, FAHC holds biweekly study tables following general meetings, and maintains a large exam bank called FAHC@UW Study Files, accessible to contributing members.
P: Professional development
Building connections to gain research positions and internships is a huge component to extracurricular and future success as an undergraduate with health career goals.
The Filipinx Association for Health Careers dedicates its third general meeting of every quarter to a professional development topic related to that time of year, such that students can prepare for upcoming professional milestones. Additionally, FAHC maintains a LinkedIn group so that active members can keep in touch with health professionals who attend FAHC events.
A: Advising from current health professionals
Filipinx Association for Health Careers members have big questions about what it’s like to be a health professional in their desired fields, and there’s no better source of information than someone who’s experienced that exact same career path.
FAHC dedicates its first general meeting of every quarter to a pre-health panel so that students can receive exposure and first-hand experience regarding a variety of health careers. Each panel is designed to have a diverse and well-balanced repertoire of allied health professionals.
M: Mentorship
The Filipinx Association For Health Careers aims to develop strong mentor/mentee relationships between its members with similar career goals, majors, or personal background. Mentors serve as a resource for mentees to seek academic advice, career advice, or simply be a close friend to spend time with and build camaraderie. Conversely, mentees serve as an opportunity for mentors to gain experience being a role model to a fellow student.
I: Interpersonal connections
As busy students, it’s important to the Filipinx Association for Health Careers that its members not only work hard during the academic year, but also find time to de-stress through socialization and activities with one another.
L: Leadership
Leadership is an important trait to have in any allied health profession. Leadership comes in many forms
Y: Youth outreach
To the Filipinx Association for Health Careers, it is not only important that we provide mentorship and educational experiences to our own members, but also to younger students as they begin to make decisions regarding their post-secondary education and career goals.
A: Active learning of clinical skills
The Filipinx Association for Health Careers not only values growing in academic knowledge to strengthen our futures, but to also grow in our clinical knowledge. After all, FAHC members will one day be working in hospitals and clinics, not classrooms.
