An Official Statement:
First and foremost, as an organization we stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, and it is crucial that we all use whatever platforms we have to raise and amplify the voices of the oppressed and to help in any way we can.
KAPWA: The Filipino linguistic unity of self and environment; the embodiment of "shared identity" and "togetherness." This was our theme for the year - to view the world as a system of intersecting identities, where people and the environment live interdependently. We aimed to explore ways in which the Filipinx and Filipinx-American communities have historically mobilized and joined in solidarity with fellow communities to combat institutional injustices in healthcare and beyond. This should be in the forefront of our minds in everything that we do, not only as future healthcare professionals, but as people. It is imperative that we educate ourselves on the social injustice issues that are occurring and have been occurring towards the Black community. We must not only acknowledge that racism is a systematic issue that is designed to work against Black, Indigenous, and people of color, but we must also use our privilege to dismantle this system.
Unfortunately, because these ascriptive norms have been so deeply ingrained in our society, their effects have been normalized and can be overlooked. As an organization, we have collectively donated, and have compiled resources about addressing anti-Blackness within our culture, what we can do to be allies and support the Black community, how to stay safe during protests, especially during a pandemic, etc.
We cannot be silent about the racial injustices that white supremacy perpetuates in our society. We must look and reflect within ourselves to address the ways in which we may be contributing to the problem. We need to point out the anti-Black sentiments that our families and friends may have. We need to stand up and use our voices for what is right. We need to demand justice because BLACK LIVES MATTER.
Again, we have compiled a comprehensive spreadsheet of useful resources that is linked below. We encourage everyone to take the time to educate yourselves and do your part in this fight for justice. We are aware that this is not a master list of all the petitions, fundraisers, organizations, etc. Please feel free to add on to this list and share it with your friends, family, and community. As always, Black lives matter.
Sincerely,
FAHC UW
